For bacteria, evolution is the key to adaptability. The mechanism most often cited is via small mutations to the genetic code over many generations. It has been shown that bacteria are subject to many more types of mutation than this simple small-scale alteration, the question remains of how much bacteria gain from each mutation type and it is this question that this bacterial model aims to answer by simulating bacterial life at the genetic scale and implementing the variety of genetic adaption mechanisms. Described here are the genetics, the model and some results showing evolution towards the goal of learning to connect a food source gradient with movement toward the food source.
