Abstract
Assistive robots provide technical aids for promoting independent living and improving quality of life of persons with chronic or degenerative impairment. Considerable effort and investment have been made in assistive robot research and development taking various approaches to blend sensing, control and feedback, user interfaces, information processing and hardware development to address functional needs of elderly and disabled people. This talk will discuss the current developments and issues in assistive robots and present a case study of shadow robot systems to help the elderly and infirm at home, a project funded by the EU.
The talk will also outline current research at the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering (CSSE) at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU). It is hoped that further research collaboration opportunities will be explored and created between the two computing departments.
