PIPS: Work at Liverpool

Research at Liverpool will concentrate on three main areas:

  1. Multi-Agent Systems: PIPS's virtual environment will be modelled as a Multi-Agent System (MAS). Each agent in the environment can be a "service" agent (e.g. those that access the knowledge sources), or a "virtual ego" representing one of the stakeholders. Research in this aspect will therefore involve devising MAS communication protocols on one hand, and modelling the virtual egos on the other.

For more information, contact Tim Miller at tim@csc.liv.ac.uk

  2. Ontologies: PIPS will involve a massive knowledge engineering effort, with knowledge coming from very heterogeneous sources, like general medical literature, drug and food formularies, product information, etc. Heterogeneity will have to be addressed not only in terms of language/content, but also in terms of level of trust/credibility of a source.

For more information, contact Luigi Iannone at luigi@csc.liv.ac.uk

  3. Dialogue Processing: PIPS puts a great emphasis on addressing the important problem of patient's compliance to medical and lifestyle recommendations. We contribute to this issue by modelling the communication with the system by means of Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques. In particular, we work on persuasive communication, coupled with a cognitive model of the user.
