The immediate successor to ALGOL'60 was ALGOL W. In essence this represented a tidying up of ALGOL'60 with a few new features. ALOGOL W was considered to be a worthy successor to ALGOL'60 and, although not widely used, was to be one of the major influences on the design of the programming language PASCAL.
The next successor to ALGOL'60 was ALGOL'68, which was produced (in 1968) amid much controversy by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) ALGOL working party. Its initial specification was so obscure that there were delays in its implementation, and in the ensuing controversy many virtues of the language were lost. Consequently it never achieved wide spread usage.
