About Agentcities

Introduction

Welcome to the Ontology working group homepage in Agentcities. Our objective is to consider the practical usage of ontologies and ontology frameworks in the context of the Agentcities network. Ontologies have established themselves as a powerful tool to enable knowledge sharing, and a growing number of applications have benefited from the use of ontologies as a means to achieve semantic interoperability among heterogeneous, distributed agent systems. This working group aims to provide both foundational and technological support to the use of ontologies in distributed agent platforms. In particular the ontology working group will look at the following issues:

  • Transition from theory to practice: application of theoretical methodologies  to practical problems;
  • Reconciliation of semantic heterogeneity (translation issues and  representation structures) due to differences among cultures and modelling approahes;
  • Use and extension of existing ontologies and standards;
  • Co-ordination to the .RTD: BT ontology server, BT business ontologies;
  • Contribution to DAML+OIL and DAML-S repositories;        ·
  • Input from external sources such as W3C, or  IEEE SUO.

Our activities

We are working on producing methodological and technological recommendations to facilitate the use of ontologies in Agentcities. We will make use of comparative studies in order to identify the methodologies and technologies most suitable for the applications developed within Agentcities.
We also provide a list of more extensive resources for those interested in gaining a richer insight on ontology research.

NEW. Survey: How does the agent community use ontologies?
We have circulated via the mailing list a survey aiming to understand how the agent community uses ontology. We would like to publish the results during the next WG meeting in Helsinki, therefore your prompt input is essential. We made the survey easy to fill in, so why don't you contribute too? The form is available
here.

NEW Joint meeting @ ID 4: Communication working group and Ontologies working group.
The program is now available!

Agentcities, AgentLink, and Ontoweb Liaison meeting, Barcelona 4-5 February, 2003.
Programme now avaliable!
Please download the flyer here
In collaboration with the AgentLink Special Interest Group on Intelligent Information Agents. The program of the 8th SIG meeting is accessible here.

ID4 in Helsinki

The last meeting of the Ontology working group was held during ID4 in Helsinki. We had a fruitful discussion on some of the Agentcities projects that use ontologies but we also discussed about the future of the working group.
Discussion on the future of the working group will continue on the mailing list, please post there your ideas!
We have also collected some of the presentations made during the working group meetings or by wg members. If you have slides to contribute, please email them to
V.A.M.Tamma@csc.liv.ac.uk. Some of the slides are already available on the ID Presentations page.
If you happen to visit this page for the first time and want to fill in the Survey above, you are more then welcome
