Ph.D. positions at the Department of Computer Science

Applications are invited for a number of PhD positions to be held at the Department of Computer Science, The University of Liverpool, Liverpool, UK. Only EU/UK citizens are eligible. Non-EU citizens are not eligible for this studentship.

The studentship is available to start from October 2005, and its duration will be for 3 years.

The topic of research should be agreed with the potential supervisor.

These positions are funded (at the standard EPSRC rates) by the Department.

To apply, please send the following documents to the TWO different addresses below (by the same deadline):

  1. Standard Application Form to become a PhD student in the Department of Computer Science in the standard way (see general details addressed to all applicants, independently on this announcement, here, including also the address where to submit the Application Form - different from the address of the Department presented below!). The application should explicitly mention that the applicant wants to apply for the 2005 Departmental studentship (written on the upper part of title page and/or in the part of Application Form devoted to Funding) with mentioning also the name of the supervisor (see below). Please, take care that the registration date of this application should be by the deadline mentioned below.
  2. The following additional documentation (independently whether it was already attached to the ordinary Application Form mentioned above) directly to Dr. Sazonov (by the same deadline):
  3. A brief cover letter of application to the Departmental studentships.
  4. Personal details (name, date of birth, nationality, full current address, tel. number(s), e-mail address),
  5. Up-to-date CV with education history (including A level marks) + list of two referees (name + complete address + phone + e-mail). To speed-up the processing of applications, recommendation letters in sealed envelopes signed by the referees could be returned with the application form or sent directly to the address below.
  6. Official (up to date, for those who did not finish current study) exam transcripts. Current students of the Department of Computer Science of the University of Liverpool may present unofficial transcripts from the Spider System.
  7. Research proposal: up to 2 A4 pages detailing scientific interests and proposed research, motivations, and proposed PhD supervisor. This document must have the proposed supervisor's signature or be approved by the supervisor by e-mail (same deadline!).
  8. Any published material or any other written document providing evidence of possible quality.
  9. The documentation above (sent to Dr. Sazonov) is unnecessary to attach to or include in the standard Application Form (This note has no relation to the ordinary applicants who do not apply for the announced here studentship.) It also may be submitted in electronic format.

In any case we do invite all applicants to contact their proposed supervisor as soon as possible to discuss a suitable research plan. Applications without supervisor's approval will not be considered as applications for the studentship.

Deadline: The ordinary PhD Application Form must be submitted by April 29, 2005. By the same date all additional material must be received by Dr. Sazonov, either in electronic form or by surface mail.

Please note: Partial and late submissions will not be considered. Thus, follow all the instructions precisely.
