Editorial matter (Not in PR)

Willaston was a township of the ancient parish of Neston (a separate entry in this database), on the Wirral, until 1865, which is when the registers begin. Then, as Youngs has it, the ecclesiastical parish of Willaston was created comprising parts of the townships of Willaston and Raby from Neston parish, an additional but unspecified part of the parish of Neston, and the township of Thornton Hough from Neston parish. Pevsner dates the church building to 1854, and the parish archive in the Cheshire Record Office (CRO) supports that date for the beginning of the parish. Willaston parish was reconstructed in 1869 when the parish of Thornton Hough was created, with the loss of the part of Raby township and the township of Thornton Hough. (Note that Raby contained three detached parts of the township of Little Neston cum Hargrave.)

The population of the whole of the townships of Raby, Thornton Hough, and Willaston in 1851 was 676 people, and in 1871 1,049 people, of whom 317 and 397 lived, respectively, in Willaston.

Colin Phillips compiled these notes. Information about the make-up of the register volumes came from the CRO list. The population figures for 1851 and 1871 came from VCH Cheshire, vol. II, p. 224.) Details on the evolution of the parish came from the CRO list, from the Guide to the local administrative units of England, Vol. II Northern England, ed. F.A. Youngs, Jr (1991), pp. 28, 32, 37, 41; and from N. Pevsner, The buildings of England: Cheshire (Harmondsworth, 1971), p. 382. See the base map in A.D.M. Phillips and C. B.
