CHEADLE St Mary, 1558-1871

The Registers

Volumes 1 to 3 of the registers were re-bound in 1877.

MIXED REGISTERS

Volume 1 (PR319/5623/1) weddings July 1559-October 1661, baptisms December 1558- March 1662, burials March 1558-March 1662.
Weddings initially copied in, then entries seem to be written in a uniform hand for each year until the beginning of 1631. Thereafter handwriting is less uniform. Heading Anno 1642, but no entries. Using various forms of the Commonwealth’s marriage contract the register records weddings from May 1654 up to 25 February 1661 and then continues with the old form of entries from May to 19 October 1661.

In the baptisms a few entries are out of order up to 1642, there is a gap for 1643 and 1644, some entries for 1645, then a gap to odd entries for 1651 and 1653 before a series of christenings [NB sic] begins again in 1654 and runs to 17 March 1661. Old format entries resume on 19 May 1661 on a new page and end on 23 March 1662.

After the initial copying-in of entries, the burial entries look to have been written up in annual blocks until 1642, though a few entries are out of chronological order up to March 1642. There are then a few entries for 1642 and 1643, and then a sequence of burial entries beginning May 1654 to March 1661 before the old format entries resume in April 1661 and end February 1662. From 1654 to 1661 entries may have been entered as they occurred. Volume 1 was not completely full when it stopped being used.

Users of CPRdb are advised to read the section The make-up of the database after 1676 to April 1744 in the Editorial contribution below in relation to Volume 2 of the registers, and the other volumes which run in parallel with, or overlap with, Volume 2.

Volume 2 (PR319/5623/2) begins with marriages November 1662-April 1741, then baptisms April 1662 -April 1744, then burials April 1662-April 1744, all with evident gaps after 1709. When the register was rebound in 1877 a sheet of parchment headed ’A true copy of Cheadle register’ bearing entries for part of 1728 was bound in, as were a paper note of records for all three events from 1727-1729, and a parchment note of burials and baptisms for part of 1736. For some months in the 1660s and 1670s there are no baptisms recorded. The volume loses it chronological order at times between 1710 and 1744.

Volume 3 (PR319/5623/3) is a rough book for PR319/5623/2 from 1677 to 1722, though coverage is uneven across these dates after about 1710. See Editorial contribution below. Normal practice for the Cheshire Parish Register Project is not to include rough books in the database but, because of gaps in PR319/5623/2, data from PR319/5623/3 has been incorporated in the parish notes.

The handwriting of Cheadle Volumes 2 and 3 makes capital letters G and J difficult to distinguish. Users of the database will be well advised, when searching for surnames such as Jackson, Je(a)fferson, Jo(h)nson, and Jones, to query using both initial letters. Similarly, the surnames Bromillow or Brimillow also appear as Blomilliow or Blimillow

Volume 5 (PR319/5623/5)
Separate sequences of burials and baptisms, each for the year 1792-1812

MIXED REGISTERS FOR EACH EVENT, BEGINNING IN 1723

A sequence of paper volumes for each event was begun in 1723 (with overlaps with PR319/5623/2 for each event), but mixed registration for baptisms and burials resumed in 1792, and lasted until 1812.

BAPTISMAL REGISTERS

Volume 4 (PR319/5623/4) 1723-1792. Gap after 29 April 1739 (with one entry 10 September 1742) until April 1744. Then the register states there were no entries in May 1747. In the 1790s the register tends to use a ditto mark when more than one event took place on the same day, and in the same month.

Volumes 6-8 (PR319/5623/6-8) 1813-1880, 3 volumes
There is a separate list of baptisms at Handforth included in the Cheadle BTs for 1846.

From about 1840 onwards baptismal registers note private baptisms held elsewhere than Cheadle. Around 1847-1852 the chronological order of entries is poor.

MARRIAGE REGISTERS

Volume 10 (PR319/5623/10) 1723-1753, 1785-1793, 1796. There are gaps 1739-1744; October 1747-June 1749, with some confusing repetition of entries at this time noted in the book; and 1754-1785. Then the book has marriages 1785-31 March 1793, and 21 July to 9 June 1796.

Volumes 11-28 (PR319/5623/11-28) 18 volumes

BURIAL REGISTERS

Volume 51 (PR319/5623/51) 1723-1792, with gaps, after 8 May 1729 to 2 April 1744, then from 27 February 1747 to 17 June 1748 (but with one entry for 16 March 1748).

Volumes 52-54 (PR319/5623/52-54) 3 volumes
A few burial entries in the 1850s and early 1860s are out of order.

Editorial contribution (not in PR)

1. The make-up of the database after 1676 to April 1744

From varying dates (see Anomalous entries above) for the three different events additional material from PR319/5623/3 has been recorded in the parish notes. From 1710 (but 1711 for baptisms) entries from PR319/5623/3 are given the parish code CHDX. Paper register volumes which overlaps with PR319/5623/2 for each event were begun in 1723. Therefore in a few instances there are three, and there are commonly two, records of the same event in the various parish registers. The same event may have different dates, or names, in the separate records. Although some effort has been made in compiling the parish notes and in CPRdb for the Cheadle records (see Anomalous entries above) to identify records of the same event, in the last resort the users of CPRdb must make their own judgement about each entry.

Two parish codes have been used to compile CPRdb entries for Cheadle between 1723 and 1744. The normal parish code CHDL contains records in PR319/5623/2 and parish code CHDX contains the records of PR319/5623/4, 10, and 51 until 1744 (but until 1741 for marriages).

Given the start of separate registration for each event in 1723, albeit on paper rather than parchment, it is not clear why some records for all events continued to be entered in PR319/5623/2 between 1723 and 1744. No attempt is made here to account for this partial and confusing duplication. It is also the case that gaps (of different duration in each register) in PR319/5623/4, 10, and 51 mean that PR319/5623/2 becomes once more an important source for all three events for the years 1739-1744 in the parish archive. Furthermore, where BTs survive for the years 1677-1748, it is clear that for burials from 1723 onwards during the years in which PR319/5623/2 was in use, it is the volume known as PR319/5623/51 which best accords with the BTs, and that PR319/5623/2 was not the base from which the BTs were drawn. For marriages and baptisms after 1723, the scattering of records between PR/319/5623/2 and PR/319/5623/10 (marriages) and PR/319/5623/4 (baptisms) makes the source of the BTs uncertain. Records which do not appear in PR/319/5623/2, but do appear in PR/319/5623/4, or 10 and in the BTs, have not been included as BT only but coded CHDL in the database transcription of PR/319/5623/2.

Baptisms
under parish code CHDL from 1677 to 1711 are from PR/319/5623/2, and from 1686 to 1711 extra data in PR/319/5623/3 is noted in the parish notes (including any records exclusive to PR319/5623/3 which are under parish code CHDX). A handful of baptisms per year from 1712 to 1731 follow from PR/319/5623/2 (none for 1714, 1724, or 1727). Beginning in 1731 PR/319/5623/2 resumes what is at first sight a fullish record of baptisms to 1744. From after 29 April 1739 to April 1744 baptisms come only from PR/319/5623/2, and then from April 1744 only from PR/319/5623/4. It will be observed that some of the records under CHDL and CHDX between 1723 and 1739 appear to record the same event, but with some difference in spelling. Such differences have not been picked out in the Anomalous Entries, but a number of them will be apparent in the variants between PR/319/5623/2 and the BTs (where they survive) noted in each entry.

CHDX contains baptisms which only appear in PR/319/5623/3 between 1692 and 1713, and then baptisms in PR/319/5623/4 between 1723 and 1744.

Marriages
under CHDL from 1677 to 1709 are taken from PR/319/5623/2, with variants in PR/319/5623/3 noted in the Anomalous Entries; BT only entries are also identified there. From 1709 to 1723 PR/319/5623/2 (parish code CHDL) and PR/319/5623/3 (parish code CHDX) record disparate sets of marriages. From 1723 PR/319/5623/10 (parish code CHDX) has almost all the marriages for the rest of the decade. In the 1730s both PR/319/5623/2 and PR/319/5623/10 record marriages, rather disparately, and this continues until 1741. From 29 April 1744 PR/319/5623/10 becomes the sole record of marriages and is used from 1744 under parish code CHDL. (There is one exception, a 1748 marriage also appears in PR/319/5623/2.) Where BTs survive for the 1730s they have been compared with both CHDL and CHDX entries.

CHDX contains marriages which only appear in PR/319/5623/3 between 1685 and 1721, and then marriages in PR/319/5623/10 between 1723 and 1741.

Burials

under CHDL for from 1677 to 1710 are from PR319/5623/2, with a possible gap in early 1690, and with probable gaps in 1709 and 1710. However, in Anomalous Entries burial entries from 1677 to 1710 have been annotated with any additional information or alternative spellings in PR319/5623/3; and any records exclusive to PR319/5623/3 are also noted. In PR319/5623/2 after 1710, there are two burials for 1719, then a sequence for 3 June 1721 to 29 May 1722 and occasional entries from 1731 to 1738; also bound into the volume in the nineteenth century were paper and parchment sheets with entries dated 1728, 1729, and 1736. From 1739 to April 1744 PR319/5623/2 records a large number of burials (though there are gaps). The paper volume PR319/5623/51 was begun as a separate book for burials in 1723, and runs to 1739, then from April 1744 to 27 February 1747. Then there is a gap, until June 1748, except for one entry for March 1748. Then from June 1748 the register runs to June 1792. It is clear that from 1723 the surviving BTs much more resemble entries in PR319/5623/51 (see parish code CHDX) than in PR319/5623/2. Thus between 1723 and 1739 under parish code CHDL differences between the PR and BT are not noted under Anomalous Entries. Under parish code CHDL burial records from 2 April 1744 onwards to 1792 are taken from PR319/5623/51.

CHDX contains burials which only appear in PR/319/5623/3 between 1683 and 1723, and then burials in PR/319/5623/51 between 1723 and 1744.

Originally, the project decided to deal with these complexities of the registers by conflating the entries, and data was inputted in this way. Subsequently it was decided to deal with the registers separately, and the inputted data was edited to make up the parish code CHDL and CHDX entries in the databases. It is hoped that careful comparison of the data with the registers prevented the introduction of errors at this stage.

2. The parish of Cheadle

The ancient parish of Cheadle lay in the north of the county of Cheshire, bordering the river Mersey. It was bounded to the east by the ancient parishes of Stockport and of Prestbury, to the south by Wilmslow and to the west by the detached Stockport parish township of Stockport Etchells.

The parish comprised the townships of Cheadle Bulkley, Cheadle Moseley, and Handforth cum Bosden. Cheadle Bulkley was split into two major areas, plus some thirty-four other detached portions of the township scattered through Cheadle Moseley! There were five small detached portions of Cheadle Moseley in the eastern part of Cheadle Bulkley. The one detached portion of Handforth cum Bosden township was entirely enclosed within Stockport parish. In the nineteenth century the parish of Handforth was not created until 1877, but the Cheadle BTs refer to baptisms at Handforth chapel in 1846, and its registers begin in 1840, Cheadle Hulme All Saints parish was created in 1868 though its baptismal registers begin in 1863.

The population of Cheadle ancient parish can be estimated by the number of households in ecclesiastical ’censuses’ of 1563 (50 households or families) and in 1778 (375 houses), while the sum of the households in the townships of the parish in the hearth tax of 1664 was 208. The population of the parish in 1801 was 3,582 people, and in the area of the ancient parish in 1871 there were 11,996 people.

Colin Phillips compiled these notes using the information collected by transcribers and recorded with each transcription pad. Further information about the make-up of the register volumes came from the original registers and the list in Cheshire Archives and Local Studies, which also provided some details of the evolution of the ancient parish. Extra detail on rectors came from G. Ormerod, The history of the County Palatine and City of Chester, ed. T. Helsby (3 vols; London, 1882), III, pp. 630-1. The population estimates were gathered as follows:
1563: The diocesan population returns for 1563 and 1603, ed. A. D. Dyer and D. M. Palliser (British Academy: records of social and economic history, new series, vol. 31, 2005), p. 83; count of households

The complex parish geography of Cheadle is depicted on the base map in A.D.M. Phillips and C. B. Phillips, A new historical atlas of Cheshire (Chester, 2001).
