Prospective Students
Computers have had an enormous impact on life in recent decades, transforming the way we all work and play, and this process will continue in the years ahead. Computer technologies are evolving rapidly, and our programmes are designed to equip our graduates to respond to and drive these developments. We focus on the basic foundations and principles of the theory and practice of computing, rather than on particular techniques that may become history before you graduate. We offer a critical understanding of the current and emerging techniques that will enable you to contribute to and shape the future of computing.
Qualified undergraduate students can apply for
attainment scholarships.
International Advancement Awards
are also available for qualified
international students,
providing some support for tuition and accommodation fees.
Degree Programmes
With the goal of preparing our students to be developers and innovators, the Department of Computer Science offers prospective undergraduates seven BSc honours degree programmes, each tailored for specific outcomes such as software development, electronic commerce, artificial intelligence, or a fundamental understanding of the theory and algorithms of computer science. One of these is a four-year programme which includes a year in industry. Additionally, there is an MEng in Computer Science, for those wishing to include an element of research in their undergraduate study. For students with other interests, the Computer Science Department offers joint and combined honours programmes with the departments of mathematics, management, and electrical engineering. There are also a number of taught postgraduate degree programmes.

Research
Research plays an important role in our department, keeping our lecturers on the international forefront of development, ensuring our students are taught by people knowledgeable about state of the art advances in computer science theory and practice. The Department also offers opportunities for postgraduate research.
Our department was graded 5 in the Research Assessment
Exercise in 2001. Research is supported by
a mixture of European, national, and industrial funding, providing a
balanced portfolio of activity that feeds back into the teaching and
other professional activities in the Department.
About the Department
In April 2006, the Computer Science Department moved into our new home, the fully refurbished Ashton and George Holt buildings. Here we house our high specification computing facilities having fast internet links and a wide range of software. These laboratories are solely for use by students studying within the Computer Science Department.
